1. What is the mission of the project? Can you provide a brief overview of its core purpose and significance?

XR4Human is a three-year EU-funded project and its mission is to co-create living guidance documents on ethical and related policy, regulatory, governance, and interoperability issues of XR technologies whilst building public trust and acceptance and a strong and competitive European XR ecosystem.

2. Can you describe the expected results or outcomes the project aims to produce?

To forge a competitive ecosystem, where the European XR Industry can play a leading role in the wider deployment, adoption and acceptance of ethical and human-centered XR technologies and, at the same time, empower citizens towards informed decisions in the informed decisions in the purchase and use of XR, XR4Human aims to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Creation of an online repository of test cases that will support developers to demonstrate evidence of adherence to best practices.
  • Development of ethical frameworks, regulatory guidance, and guidance documents for developers, producers, and policymakers to set industry standards.
  • Provision of demonstrations for developers, producers, and policymakers to showcase the practical application of a Code of Conduct, ensuring its effective implementation.
  • Implementation of a rating system and educational materials aimed at informing users and citizens.

3. Who will use these results? How?

Through the development of ethical frameworks, regulatory guidance, and guidance document, XR4Human will support developers, producers, and policymakers to ensure responsible development and deployment of extended reality (XR) technologies.

In addition, through the usage of the rating system and educational materials developed by XR4Human, users will be informed about the ethical aspects of XR technologies.

4. Can you share any success stories or early achievements of the project, if applicable?

The XR4Human project has launched a dynamic online forum, connecting diverse stakeholders in the XR4Europe community. This inclusive platform fosters knowledge sharing and collaboration on ethical aspects of extended reality (XR) technologies, addressing fragmentation in the European XR sector.

5. Could you introduce the team members responsible for driving the project forward?

XR4Human project brings together a multi-national and transdisciplinary consortium, coordinated by Rigmor Baraas, Professor and Director of Research for the National Centre for Optics, Vision and Eye Care, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at the University of South-Eastern Norway, Campus Kongsberg and Rose Bernabe, Professor of Research Ethics and Research Integrity at the University of Oslo and Adjunct Professor of Medical Research Ethics at the University of South-Eastern Norway.
